Streets that preserve the layout of a 16th century city, historic mansions with pastel colours and stone porticoes, interior courtyards with wooden balconies, cosy little shops and restaurants, friendly people with a charming accent, a lively, university atmosphere...

A leisurely stroll through the streets of San Cristóbal de La Laguna is enough to understand why it is on the UNESCO list. As if in a time machine, the traveller feels transported back to more than 500 years ago, when the layout of the city was inspired by navigational charts. In fact, the plan of San Cristóbal reads like a "star map" and has been the forerunner of cities like Havana or Lima. Today, that kind of colonial essence remains intact.
