Historia y restos de los guanches

- english below -

The Guanches, an ethnic group and indigenous people of the Canary Islands, have long lived in total isolation from the rest of the world on these islands. This tribe has left astonishing remains that continue to intrigue anthropologists and archaeologists.

There are strange legends about this civilisation, notably that they could be inhabitants of Atlantis or descendants of the Vikings.  Some of the most eminent anthropologists indicate that the most likely lead is that they were Berbers from North Africa, based on the study of genetic material or the remains of Guanche writing identical to others found in Libya and Algeria.

The Guanches built the monumental citadel of Santa Lucia. It shows that this tribe had advanced architectural knowledge. The Guanches were able to dig large silos high in the mountain to store their reserves.

Another sacred place of the Guanches seems to be Balos. Traces of an ancient script have been found there, but it has not yet been deciphered because it is so old. It was probably stopped being used several centuries before Christ, says the BBC.
