Living in El Desierto: A Quiet Hilltop Corner with Big Views

El Desierto is a little-known rural zone above Granadilla de Abona, known for its dramatic views, wide skies, and traditional agricultural roots. As its name suggests, the area is dry and open, offering wide plots of land and total tranquility — perfect for those wanting a home in the hills with no close neighbours.

Property availability is low, but prices are still reasonable. Ruins and renovation projects may start around €90,000. Small homes or fincas in good condition range between €140,000 and €250,000 depending on size and land. Well-renovated or architecturally designed homes with large plots can exceed €300,000.

IBI is minimal and there are no community fees. Properties often include rural water access, solar potential, and room for agriculture. Most are classified as rural, so permissions and zoning must be verified case-by-case.

Housing here is simple: old Canarian structures, stonework, thick walls, and wooden finishes. Some newer eco-homes have appeared, taking advantage of the open land and off-grid possibilities.

Life is extremely peaceful. There are no services within El Desierto itself — all shopping and transport is done in Granadilla, just 10 minutes away. This is an area for self-sufficient living and solitude.

The climate is warm and dry, with excellent sunshine levels. At over 600 meters above sea level, nights are cooler and the air is crisp. It’s perfect for vineyards, orchards, or native gardens.

The community is very limited. A few Canarian farming families and independent-minded residents live here year-round. It’s a place for retreat, creativity, or simply peace and privacy with mountain and sea views.
