Living in Erjos and Ruigómez: Tenerife’s Quiet Highlands of Nature and Simplicity

Erjos and Ruigómez are two small rural hamlets located in the highlands of northwestern Tenerife, within the municipality of El Tanque. Surrounded by pine forests, farmland, and some of the island’s most beautiful hiking routes, these villages are ideal for those seeking solitude, fresh air, and a deeply rural lifestyle. Life here moves slowly, shaped by the rhythm of nature, with almost no tourist activity or urban distractions. For residents looking to disconnect, grow their own food, or simply enjoy wide-open skies and silence, Erjos and Ruigómez offer a unique setting.

Property prices in both villages are among the lowest on the island. Small houses or renovation projects can be found starting from €70,000 to €90,000. Two- or three-bedroom village homes in decent condition usually range between €100,000 and €160,000. Fincas with land – sometimes including orchards, tanks, or outbuildings – are priced from €170,000 to €250,000, depending on accessibility and views. Larger rural properties that have been fully modernized or offer eco-living features can exceed €300,000, although these remain rare. The affordability and space make these areas ideal for buyers looking for a retreat or self-sufficient lifestyle.

Ownership costs are extremely low. Annual IBI (property tax) is often under €200, and there are virtually no community fees, as most homes are independent and lack shared infrastructure. Some rural properties come with agricultural water rights or tanks, which have separate maintenance or subscription fees, but overall, the cost of living is minimal. Many homeowners take advantage of the land to grow vegetables, plant trees, or install solar systems, further reducing expenses.

Housing in Erjos and Ruigómez is traditional and rustic. Most homes are single-storey buildings made of stone or brick, with red-tiled roofs and thick walls to handle the cooler climate. Some properties require renovation, but many have already been updated with new kitchens, windows, or fireplaces. Expect features like wood-burning stoves, terraced gardens, and plenty of outdoor space. There are no apartment blocks or gated communities – just small family homes scattered across hillsides, often with breathtaking views over the mountains, forest, or even the distant coastline.

Services in the villages are minimal. There are a couple of small shops and local cafés, but for most needs – groceries, schools, banks, or healthcare – residents drive to El Tanque, Santiago del Teide, or Icod de los Vinos. Public transport is limited, so having a car is essential. That said, the area’s natural beauty is unmatched: Erjos is right next to the Teno Rural Park and famous walking routes such as the Monte del Agua trail, while Ruigómez offers open farmland, forest paths, and wide skies. It’s a perfect setting for walkers, birdwatchers, and those craving stillness.

The climate in these highlands is cool and green. Unlike the dry, sunny southern coast, Erjos and Ruigómez enjoy regular mist, rain, and lower temperatures – especially in winter. Summers are mild, rarely rising above 25°C, while winters often bring daytime temperatures around 12–16°C, with chilly nights. Heating is needed during the colder months, and cloud cover is frequent. However, many residents appreciate the crisp air, the seasonal changes, and the fertile conditions that make gardening and outdoor living so rewarding here.

The population is very small and predominantly Canarian, made up of long-established families and a few international residents who have chosen the area for its peace and natural beauty. Foreigners living here are often self-employed, retired, or remote workers seeking a quiet base. Spanish is essential, and integration is smoother for those who participate in the rural lifestyle and respect the traditions of the area. While the community is small, it is welcoming – especially to those who value nature, calm, and simplicity over convenience or nightlife.

In summary, Erjos and Ruigómez are ideal for those who truly want to step away from noise, density, and fast living. These are not places for quick errands or resort comforts, but rather for people who find luxury in nature, solitude, and space. With affordable property, fresh air, and the charm of untouched Tenerife, these villages offer a lifestyle that’s increasingly rare on the island – and all the more valuable for those who choose it.
