Living in El Tanque: A Rural Retreat with Views and Tradition

El Tanque is a small village located in the northwest of Tenerife, perched between the coast and the forested hills above Garachico. It’s one of the island’s lesser-known municipalities, offering a peaceful, slow-paced lifestyle far from the tourist centers. Surrounded by green landscapes, banana plantations, and pine forests, El Tanque is ideal for those who appreciate nature, cooler temperatures, and authentic Canarian culture. It’s not a place for nightlife or beach clubs, but for quiet walks, gardening, and mountain views, it’s hard to beat.


Property prices in El Tanque are among the most affordable on the island. One-bedroom homes or apartments start around €70,000 to €90,000, while two- and three-bedroom village houses typically range between €100,000 and €160,000. Larger traditional homes with land or panoramic views can be found between €170,000 and €250,000. Renovated fincas or rural properties can exceed €300,000, especially those offering tourism potential. With plenty of space and older buildings still available, El Tanque appeals to buyers looking for a countryside project or a peaceful retreat at a very reasonable cost.


Ownership costs are extremely low. Annual IBI (property tax) for most properties falls between €100 and €250. Since most homes are independent, community fees are rarely applicable. Utilities are minimal, and many homes benefit from thick walls and natural ventilation, reducing energy needs. While rural upkeep may involve additional work for land or gardens, the overall cost of living in El Tanque is among the lowest on the island.


The housing stock consists largely of traditional Canarian homes – single or two-storey houses built in the island’s rustic style, with whitewashed walls, red tile roofs, and wooden details. The absence of modern residential complexes keeps the village feeling local and authentic, with a clear connection to its historical roots.


Life in El Tanque is simple and community-oriented. The village has basic services: a few shops, local cafés, a pharmacy, and public facilities such as a school and town hall. Larger supermarkets and amenities are found in Icod de los Vinos or Garachico, both a short drive away. Public transport is limited, so a car is essential for most residents. That said, the area offers beautiful walking paths, a paragliding launch site, and close proximity to the Teno Rural Park – ideal for lovers of outdoor life and peace. This is not a location for people looking for convenience or entertainment, but rather for those seeking space, stillness, and nature.


The climate in El Tanque is cooler and greener than the arid southern coast. Winters are mild but often cloudy and humid, with average daytime temperatures around 16–18°C. Summers are comfortable, rarely exceeding 25–27°C. The area receives more rain than the south, especially between November and March, which supports its lush vegetation. This microclimate makes it a good choice for those who prefer cooler weather and don’t mind some misty days. It also makes the region one of the greenest and most fertile on the island.


The local population is mainly Canarian, with a strong sense of community and local identity. The foreign resident base is small but growing, made up mostly of Europeans seeking a quiet, rural lifestyle. German, Belgian, and Italian residents are the most common among the expats, often choosing El Tanque for retirement, teleworking, or ecological living. Spanish is essential for daily interaction, and integration is smoother for those who embrace the language and participate in the rhythms of rural life. People here tend to be friendly and helpful, especially to those who respect the quiet lifestyle and traditional customs.


In conclusion, El Tanque is ideal for buyers who want space, serenity, and a connection with nature – all at a fraction of the cost of more central areas. While it may not suit those looking for modern amenities or sunny beach days, it offers something just as valuable: a genuine sense of place, stunning landscapes, and a lifestyle that invites you to slow down and breathe. For the right resident, El Tanque is not just a destination – it’s a way of life.
