Every year, on May 30th, the people of the Canary Islands celebrate Día de Canarias, a day dedicated to the culture, history, and identity of this unique archipelago. This date commemorates a major historical event: the first session of the Canary Islands Parliament in 1983, marking the autonomy of the islands. It was a key moment in the region’s process of self-government, ushering in a new era for the Canary Islands.

🎉 How is it celebrated?

Día de Canarias is marked with a variety of events that celebrate the island's rich culture and heritage. Here’s how it’s celebrated:

  • Traditional Music and Dance: Folkloric groups fill the streets with traditional dances like the "isa" and "folía," accompanied by instruments such as the timple and drums. 🎶
  • Local Gastronomy: Markets and fairs offer traditional dishes like papas arrugadas with mojo, gofio, puchero, and chorizo de Teror. 🍽️
  • Traditional Sports: Demonstrations of Canarian wrestling, jumping of the shepherd (salto del pastor), and ball games are organized to highlight the island’s unique sports heritage. ⚽
  • Cultural Events: Exhibitions, concerts, and parades, such as the famous Romería de San Isidro in Los Realejos, showcase the cultural richness of the region. 🎭
